How to make a seam on your crochet yarn?

  • Make a high point when you notice that a few inches are missing – 15cm to 25cm is a good measure,
  • Take two rings at that last high point,
  • Separate the beginning of the new yarn line and fold it in half,
  • Pull this thread with the needle and lace the yarn.
  • With the two threads attached to the other hand, lace the yarn,
  • Make the following stitches using the two threads, always passing them back and forth at the high points,
  • Keep both lines at work so that they are very secure and do not come loose quickly,
  • Repeat until the old thread is fully incorporated into the job, and now you will only use the new thread.

How to choose crochet hooks?

  • Choose your needle material: Steel and aluminum hooks are used for many jobs, such as lace, and are the most classic. For larger jobs, like scarves, blouses, or hats, with thick wool, it is better to prefer bamboo or plastic needles. And if you want to start making a blanket or rug, plastic is highly recommended. For beginners, plastic needles are the cheapest types but start with a diameter of 6 mm. If your budget allows, choose a wooden or aluminum hook size 4 or 5 mm.
  • What is the diameter of your needle?: As with knitting needles, a crochet hook has a number that defines its size. A needle with the number 4 will have a diameter of 0.4 cm or 4 mm. So, the higher the number, the bigger the point. Depending on the yarn or yarn chosen, the number to be used is written on it. But for beginners and apprentices, it is better to use a classic 0.4 or 0.5 cm needle to visualize your result better. As you gain experience, it will be easier for you to know which needle number is best for you, because each person has a unique way of crocheting, more or less tight. There are sizes between 12.5 to 20 cm, but the most common and recommended size is 15 cm.

Type of crochet hook

  • Nickel-plated steel – these are the most well-known and traditional ones, usually for work with thinner wires a hook with this material is used. For example: 0.6mm / 0.75mm / 1.0mm / 1.25mm / 1.50mm / 1.75mm.
  • Colored aluminum – very similar to traditional nickel-plated steel, but they are slightly lighter because they are aluminum. They are painted, which makes it easier to identify the size, as each measurement has a color. Aluminum hooks allow you to work smoothly and quickly.
  • Plastic – are available in all standard sizes, as well as jumbo hooks. They are very large and usually made of hollow plastic because it is light.
  • Bamboo – are light and warm in hand. They are available in all sizes, from the smallest to the jumbo, but are usually used for strings (thicker lines) and even strips of fabric or plastic.
  •  Aluminum hook with rubberized handle – they are more anatomical because of the flattened and rubberized grip.
  • Aluminum hook with bamboo handle – ideal for those who like to work with the bamboo handle, but prefer the way the wire slides in the aluminum. The example below is from the Círculo brand. They indicate this needle to work with the Baroque thread.
  • Steel with double tip – usually, each tip has a measurement, so you have two needles in one. Besides, it is possible to crochet Tunisian or Afghan (click here to learn more) using the double pointed needle.
  • Aluminum hook with plastic and rubber handle – They are the ones that come first on the head of the crochet girls. They are even considered objects of desire by many. They are more expensive and are imported from Japan. They are deemed ergonomic needles, made to fit the hands better. Some crochet women say it helps to prevent calluses on the finger caused by the constant practice of crocheting a lot.
